Operating context
A growing defense-electronics operation needed a formal environmental-screening capability and a disciplined response to a recurring connector-related failure pattern exposed during environmental testing.
What made the work difficult
The work had to balance production shipment needs with constrained test capacity and equipment readiness while preserving technical controls and separating interacting failure mechanisms from simplistic root-cause assumptions.
Responsibility and authority
Dean established and supervised the ESS department, including personnel, procedures, scheduling, equipment operations, computerized records, and test support. He also led connector failure analysis, corrective action, training, verification, and implementation.
How the work moved forward
- Built the formal ESS department, procedures, equipment controls, scheduling, and computerized test-record system.
- Established yield and failed-test-location tracking to support production and reliability decisions.
- Analyzed the connector failure pattern across environmental conditions, assembly and workmanship, and component behavior.
- Implemented corrective actions, revised procedures and work instructions, trained personnel, and verified effectiveness.
