Operating context
The early COVID-19 emergency created an immediate shortage of face coverings for healthcare, first responders, essential workers, and public agencies while declining elective procedures threatened normal orthopedic-product demand and workforce continuity.
What made the work difficult
The company had to redirect production quickly while maintaining quality discipline, regulatory controls, workforce safety, supplier coordination, and core medical-device operations.
Responsibility and authority
As General Manager and COO, Dean identified the opportunity, initiated the conversion, set priorities, redirected resources, and led execution across operations, engineering, supply chain, HR, quality and regulatory work, commercialization, and communications.
How the work moved forward
- Mobilized cross-functional teams around rapid product prototyping and design.
- Directed tooling, equipment, scheduling, material, supplier, staffing, and training changes needed to convert manufacturing capacity.
- Maintained quality and regulatory workstreams including controlled procedures, traceability, inspection, labeling, testing, and EUA-related documentation.
- Coordinated packaging, commercialization, media outreach, and executive messaging alongside factory execution.
