Product Development

A product is not finished at design release; it has to survive manufacturing, quality, supply, commercialization, and customer use.

How I approach it

What this means in my work.

My product-development work has crossed opportunity assessment, requirements, engineering, sourcing, quality and regulatory work, manufacturing transfer, tooling, packaging, commercialization, and launch. I tend to see product development as an end-to-end operating problem rather than an engineering phase alone.

That is especially important in regulated or manufactured products, where design choices affect process capability, supplier risk, labor, documentation, validation, inventory, and the economics of bringing the product to market.

In practice

The product has to work in the business, not only on the drawing.

These examples span concept, engineering, regulated development, manufacturing transfer, commercialization, and launch.

Across these examples

The recurring pattern.

The recurring pattern is end-to-end ownership. Stronger products resulted when engineering, quality, manufacturing, sourcing, and commercialization decisions were made with the whole lifecycle in view.
