Operating context
A large medical-product portfolio accumulated product, component, catalog, and packaging complexity that increased operating burden and created lifecycle decisions across functions.
What made the work difficult
Reducing complexity required more than deleting SKUs. Decisions had to account for customer continuity, sales impact, product data, manufacturing changes, inventory use-up, packaging, catalogs, and cross-functional implementation.
Responsibility and authority
As General Manager and COO, Dean set portfolio priorities and decision criteria and led cross-functional coordination across product management, sales, engineering, graphics, purchasing, production, IT, and finance.
How the work moved forward
- Established and applied product and category consolidation and discontinuation criteria.
- Used sales and customer-impact analysis to prioritize redesign, consolidation, and lifecycle work.
- Coordinated finished-good, subassembly, and component reductions with product-data and catalog changes.
- Managed packaging and material transitions together with inventory-use-up controls.
- Governed implementation while protecting customer and revenue continuity.
