Operations Leadership

Operations leadership, in my experience, is less about owning one function than making the whole operating system work together.

How I approach it

What this means in my work.

My strongest operations work has usually sat at the boundaries between functions: manufacturing, engineering, quality, supply chain, finance, systems, people, and customers. The job is to understand how decisions in one area change the work somewhere else and then create enough clarity, control, and accountability for the organization to execute.

That has included steady-state improvement, major systems changes, product launches, cost and labor reduction, emergency response, recovery work, and executive operating responsibility. The setting changes, but the leadership problem is often the same: connect the functions, make tradeoffs visible, and keep the organization moving.

In practice

The common problem is rarely confined to one function.

The work below spans different industries, eras, and problem types, but the recurring responsibility is cross-functional operating performance.

Across these examples

The recurring pattern.

Across these examples, the recurring pattern is integration. Durable improvement usually required more than a process change or a new system. It required aligning responsibilities, information, priorities, controls, measurements, and operating routines across the organization.
