Situation

Operating context

PPI needed additional manufacturing capacity and acquired a nearby 20,000-square-foot former roofing-tile plant that had been vacant for years and was in major disrepair.

Challenge

What made the work difficult

The project had to turn a neglected industrial shell into a working medical-device manufacturing facility. Rehabilitation, utilities, safety, security, networking, warehouse flow, production layout, equipment integration, and the physical move all had to be coordinated.

Dean's role

Responsibility and authority

As General Manager and COO, Dean led key planning and operational-integration work. He connected manufacturing, warehouse, material-handling, equipment, staffing, technology, and move requirements to facility layouts and formal project plans. Acquisition, construction, trades, equipment installation, and relocation were shared efforts with company leadership, employees, vendors, utilities, contractors, and public entities.

How the work moved forward

  1. Integrated facility rehabilitation with manufacturing, warehouse, equipment, utilities, safety, security, networking, and operating-flow requirements.
  2. Developed and revised facility and production-line layouts to support equipment placement, storage, material handling, and production flow.
  3. Used formal project planning to coordinate the plant transition and operating dependencies.
  4. Coordinated the operating side of the facility expansion with company teams and local-government stakeholders.
